In
1975 the National Film Board of Canada was commissioned by the
Federal Government to produce a large 'coffee table' book to
be presented to the American people and the United States Government
to celebrate the American Bi-Centennial in 1976. Spiteri was
selected as one of the Photographers to photograph this project.
It was to be a book of photographs taken within close proximity
to the USA/Canadian boarder. When the book was produced the
designers decided to go with a strictly vertical format. This,
in many people's opinion and some of the artists, left the best
of the work 'on the cutting room floor.'
The
Between Friends Series by Spiteri consists of thirty-five prints,
mostly unpublished images. These are images of Western Heritage
that at the time, were over a quarter of a century old and in
most case no longer exit.
